Tom Holland has identified British actor Owen Cooper as his preferred candidate to succeed him as Spider-Man, while noting he is not stepping away from the role in the immediate future.
Holland, who has portrayed Peter Parker in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2016, is set to return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, scheduled for release on July 31.
The actor made his comments during an Esquire interview in which he reflected on the long-term future of the franchise and the eventual transition to a new lead.
Owen Cooper, a 15-year-old British actor who gained attention for his performance in Netflix’s Adolescence, was highlighted by Holland as a strong potential successor.
Speaking about the possibility of a future recasting, Holland said, “Owen Cooper would be awesome,” adding that he is “super-talented and the talk of the town right now.” He also described the Spider-Man role as a “great springboard” for emerging actors.
Holland indicated that while continuing on-screen remains his priority, he would also like to contribute to the franchise in a producing capacity, though he acknowledged it is “pretty tough to get a producing credit on future movies.”
The actor also referenced a desire to support future cast members in a mentoring capacity, comparing it to the early guidance he received from Robert Downey Jr. during his entry into the MCU.
Separately within the same interview, Holland confirmed he and Zendaya have privately married, and noted they will continue to appear together on screen in upcoming projects, including Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
