Reforms to revive Pakistan Post

Privatisation fears grow amid restructuring plans

RAWALPINDI:

Amid reports of potential privatisation and employees' concerns about workforce reductions, the federal government has launched a comprehensive reform programme to eliminate Pakistan Post's financial deficit and transform the national postal service into a profitable, self-sustaining institution.

Acting on the directives of the Federal Minister for Communications, officials are preparing a modern business plan designed to enhance revenue generation, improve service delivery and strengthen the organisation's long-term financial viability.

The initiative is also intended to safeguard the institution from privatisation by improving its operational efficiency and commercial performance.

However, reports regarding potential privatisation and workforce reductions have sparked widespread concern among employees. Postal unions and the Postal Workers Federation have voiced strong reservations over the proposed reforms and have called for greater transparency regarding the future of the organisation and its workforce.

The centrepiece of the reform strategy is a comprehensive corporate restructuring programme focused on organisational modernisation, workforce optimisation and cost reduction. To support this process, Pakistan Post is set to engage a professional consultant who will conduct a detailed audit of the department's operational and financial structures before recommending a long-term transformation framework.

Pakistan Post director general Maqsood Ahmed confirmed that the primary objective of the initiative is to modernise the institution and strengthen its financial foundations.
