Greta Gerwig’s upcoming fantasy film Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is set for a major global theatrical release, with Sony Pictures Entertainment handling international distribution ahead of its Netflix debut.

The film will arrive in IMAX and cinemas worldwide on February 12, 2027, with exclusive IMAX previews beginning on February 10. According to Netflix, the movie will later stream globally on the platform from April 2, 2027.

Sony Pictures will oversee the international theatrical rollout, while Netflix will manage the film’s domestic distribution across North America. The release is expected to include major cinema chains such as AMC, Regal, Cinemark, Cineplex, Marcus and Harkins, alongside thousands of regional and independent theatres.

The partnership marks another collaboration between Netflix and Sony Pictures, following their existing distribution and streaming agreements. Netflix Film chairman Dan Lin said the project represents the type of ambitious filmmaking the company wants to support, giving audiences the opportunity to experience the movie in theatres before its streaming release.

Written and directed by Greta Gerwig, Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew will mark the first screen adaptation of C.S. Lewis’s 1955 novel of the same name. The story serves as an origin chapter in the beloved Chronicles of Narnia universe.

The film features a mix of emerging and established talent, including David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell alongside Emma Mackey, Carey Mulligan, Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, Daniel Craig and Meryl Streep.

Produced by Mark Gordon, Amy Pascal, Vincent Sieber-Smith and Gerwig, the movie is also executive produced by Patricia Whitcher, Douglas Gresham and Melvin Adams for the C.S. Lewis Estate.

With Gerwig leading the project, Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew is expected to become one of Netflix’s biggest fantasy releases, combining a major theatrical launch with a global streaming release.
