‘The Devil Wears Prada’ franchise passes $1 billion at the global box office

The Devil Wears Prada franchise has officially surpassed $1bn at the worldwide box office, thanks to the continued success of The Devil Wears Prada 2.
According to box office figures reported by Deadline, the sequel has earned $676m globally after seven weeks in cinemas. Combined with the original 2006 film’s reported worldwide total of $326.5m, the fashion comedy franchise has now crossed the $1bn mark.
Released by Disney’s 20th Century Studios, The Devil Wears Prada 2 reunited much of the creative team behind the beloved original. Director David Frankel returned alongside screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna, while stars Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci reprised their roles.
The original film was based on Lauren Weisberger’s bestselling novel and became a cultural phenomenon after its release in 2006. Over the years, it developed a devoted following and remained one of the most popular comedy dramas among audiences.
The sequel opened on May 1 and delivered an impressive $233m worldwide debut. In the United States, it earned $76.7m during its opening weekend, setting new franchise records.
Within just nine days of release, the sequel had already surpassed the original film’s entire domestic run. The first movie finished with $124.7m in North America, while the sequel has now reached $217.9m domestically.
International audiences have also embraced the film. The United Kingdom has emerged as the highest grossing overseas market with $45.8m, followed by Italy with $37.3m. Germany has contributed $33.2m, while Japan brought in $31.9m.
Strong performances have also been recorded in Brazil, Mexico, France, China and Spain. In Italy, the sequel became the highest grossing non local film currently playing in the market.
The success marks another major achievement for Disney in 2026. The studio currently holds several of the year’s biggest box office hits and has strengthened its position ahead of the release of Pixar’s Toy Story 5.
Much of the sequel’s popularity has been credited to nostalgia and the return of the original cast. Fans who embraced the first film two decades ago have returned to cinemas, while younger viewers have discovered the franchise for the first time.
Twenty years after Miranda Priestly first commanded audiences to pay attention to fashion, The Devil Wears Prada continues to prove its enduring appeal.
