Fans around the world are celebrating a hopeful update on the health of Welsh music legend Bonnie Tyler, who has reportedly woken up from an induced coma after spending more than a month in intensive care.
The 75-year-old singer, whose real name is Gaynor Hopkins, has been hospitalized in Faro, Portugal, since early May following a series of severe medical complications. According to a statement from her team, Tyler is now conscious but remains in a "very serious condition" and continues to receive treatment in the intensive care unit.
Tyler's health crisis began after she underwent emergency surgery for a perforated bowel on March 30. Doctors later placed her in an induced coma as they worked to treat a widespread infection that developed following the operation. In recent weeks, her condition reportedly worsened when she suffered a cardiorespiratory arrest, though medical staff were able to successfully revive and stabilize her.
The latest update marks the first significant positive development in Tyler's lengthy recovery, prompting an outpouring of support from fans worldwide.
One of the most recognizable voices of the 1980s, Tyler rose to international fame with hits including the song Total Eclipse of the Heart and the song Holding Out for a Hero. Her distinctive raspy vocals helped her sell millions of records and earn multiple platinum certifications throughout a career spanning more than five decades.
In 2023, Tyler was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire by William, Prince of Wales in recognition of her contributions to music.
Before falling ill, the singer had recently completed a mini-tour of the United Kingdom and released a new single, Only Love.
While Tyler's condition remains critical, news that she has regained consciousness offers a glimmer of hope as the beloved singer continues her recovery. Fans and fellow musicians alike are expected to be closely watching for further updates in the coming days.
