TAXILA:

Experts, civil society representatives, and local residents at a Lok Chopal (public dialogue) held in Taxila under the theme "Pakistan: Thirsty While Sitting Beside Water" discussed the country's worsening water crisis in detail and warned that Pakistan could face severe challenges in the future if immediate measures are not taken to conserve and manage water resources effectively.

The event was organised at Kiani House, set in the scenic and historic city of Taxila, through a collaboration between the Gandhara Taxila Centre for Development (GTCD), Gandhara Odyssey Private Limited, and Taxila Baithak. The discussion focused on the rapidly growing issues of water scarcity, water pollution, and the inefficient use of water resources in Pakistan.

The chief guest, renowned water resources expert Dr Hassan Abbas, said Pakistan is increasingly becoming one of the countries where per capita water availability is declining to alarming levels. He noted that climate change, population growth, excessive extraction of groundwater, and poor water management have further aggravated the situation.

Dr Abbas stressed the need for effective policymaking at the national level, expansion of water storage capacity, adoption of modern irrigation systems, and greater public awareness to ensure water conservation. He warned that failure to take serious action today would leave future generations facing acute water shortages and the resulting social and economic challenges.

Participants also shared their views and recommendations, agreeing that the water crisis is not solely the responsibility of government institutions but a collective responsibility of every citizen. Speakers highlighted the need to prevent water wastage at domestic, agricultural, and industrial levels and to promote its efficient and responsible use.

The participants expressed their commitment to safeguarding Pakistan's water future through public awareness, practical initiatives at the local level, and collective efforts. At the conclusion of the session, speakers emphasized stronger cooperation among experts, social activists, and local communities and called for a coordinated strategy to address the country's water challenges.
