PTI demands Imran's immediate hospital transfer after jail report flags BP issues

Rana Sanaullah refutes claim that Imran not getting medical treatment, says best specialists provided to PTI founder

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Monday expressed concern about party founder Imran Khan's elevated blood pressure, which was revealed in a report submitted by the Adiala jail superintendent to the Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan, and demanded that he be immediately transferred to the hospital for treatment.

The report was submitted today, a day before the SC is due to take up Imran's cases, and flagged high blood pressure in the former prime minister as it recommended more family visits to reduce his anxiety and blood pressure issues.

Addressing a press conference on the matter, PTI leaders said that Imran should be moved to a hospital and be provided access to his doctors, his family and his lawyers.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi noted that the recent report on Imran Khan's health was “very worrying” and had “worried the entire nation".

Afridi said that "whenever Imran’s personal doctors checked his blood pressure, it was normal, but today's official report said it was high”.

He further stated that Imran's health concerns were a genuine and serious problem and he was not getting his platelets lowered artificially, adding that "neither his family, lawyers nor his personal doctors had met Imran since December 2”.

CM Afridi noted that despite the official report coming out, the PTI did not know the truth about what happened to Imran inside the jail, further stating that the current rulers and ‘kidnappers’ were responsible for his present health condition.

He further said that ever since “Imran's eye problem came to prominence, we had demanded that his treatment be done in the best hospital under the supervision of his personal doctors, in the presence of his family members”.

Afridi stated that Imran’s meetings with his lawyers and family members should be restored, adding that “our demand was neither unconstitutional nor illegal" and that the “judiciary was also silent on the issue of Imran's health and no notice had been taken so far".

"The most popular leader of the country's largest party was in jail, if the judiciary cannot provide justice to him, then what justice will it give to the common man?" he asked.

CM Afridi said that the last hope of 250 million people was the judiciary, adding that “we are pleading for justice from the judiciary and not demanding any extraordinary relief".

He said that a three-member bench would hear Imran's case tomorrow, adding that “tomorrow is also the day for lawyers and family to meet him, and that these meetings should be mandatory".

"We request the judiciary to fulfil our legitimate demand regarding Imran's treatment and meeting him," Afridi stated, further noting that Imran's personal doctors, family, lawyers and party leadership would decide a clear course of action after mutual consultation.

"If the judiciary does not deliver justice, the people will take justice into their own hands," he further said.

Afridi added that "neither party leaders, nor institutions, nor the judiciary could stand in the way of justice for the people” and that only his family could inform the nation about the real state of Imran’s health.

"It had been confirmed that Khan’s blood pressure was high. It is the concern and demand of every Pakistani that Imran be immediately shifted to a hospital so that he could receive the best medical treatment," PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan said.

"Tomorrow, our case is filed in the Supreme Court, and we implore the chief justice and courts for justice. We have gone to the high court 25 times, and to the Supreme Court 15 times. This is Khan’s fundamental legal right, and he should be allowed to meet his family, his doctors and lawyers tomorrow," Gohar added.

He further stated that "till the time that access is not granted to Imran and meetings with him are not allowed, till he does not get medical treatment, our worries about him will not subside."

"Since last October, access has been denied to Imran, and we have been demanding that this 'cat and mouse game' should end", Gohar said.

Explaining Rule 265 of Pakistan Prison Rules 1978, the barrister said, “It only bars political statements inside the prison and not outside.”

Former National Assembly speaker and PTI leader Asad Qaiser noted that the entire nation was worried about Imran’s health after the report came out, further stating that it was “our demand that Imran’s family and doctors can meet him and that he be shifted to a hospital”.

“We request the court that Imran should be given justice. You would recall that when Nawaz Sharif was in jail and got sick, our government transferred him to a hospital and provided him with all facilities,” Qaiser said.

He further stated that “at present, we are witnessing the worst violation of fundamental human rights. Our only demand is that Imran should be given justice in all the cases against him. This is our right, and we are not getting our constitutional rights”.

Qaiser said that even the rules of the ‘Jail Manual’ are not being followed, which are applied even in the case of criminals, terrorists, smugglers and murderers, adding that Imran, who has “bestowed glory and respect” to this country and is a former prime minister, is being denied his fundamental rights.

“We hope that the Supreme Court will give us justice tomorrow,” he said.

Meanwhile, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Political and Public Affairs Sanaullah refuted reports that Imran was not getting proper medical treatment, stating that the information available regarding his health, including his blood pressure, did not support the concerns expressed by Leader of the Opposition in the Senate Allama Raja Nasir Abbas.

Speaking in the Senate, he said that the PTI founder was being provided the best available medical treatment and that there had been no negligence in addressing his health concerns while in judicial custody.

Responding to a point of order raised by Abbas, Sanaullah noted that responsibility for the health and treatment of a person in judicial custody rested with the authorities concerned as well as the court under whose orders the person was confined.

He said that if any negligence occurred in providing medical treatment to a person in custody, the authorities responsible for his custody and care would be answerable under the law.

Referring to the PTI founder’s eye ailment, he said treatment had been provided by some of the best specialists available in Pakistan, having expertise of international standards in dealing with such medical conditions.

He said the required injections and other treatment had been administered, while medical examinations and diagnostic tests were also carried out. Sanaullah said doctors from Al-Shifa were also involved in his treatment and a doctor proposed by Imran was included in the medical team.

Sanaullah said petitions concerning the PTI founder were pending before the Islamabad High Court and the Supreme Court and proceedings were taking place in accordance with the law.

Regarding meetings with Imran in jail, he said such meetings were also taking place in accordance with the prescribed procedure.

The adviser said that any issue relating to the PTI founder’s custody, medical treatment or meetings would be dealt with strictly in accordance with the law and relevant court orders.
