Harry Potter HBO series casts Peter Serafinowicz as Peeves the Poltergeist

HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter television series has cast actor and comedian Peter Serafinowicz as Peeves the Poltergeist, a mischievous Hogwarts spirit known for causing chaos in the castle corridors.

Peeves is a fan-favourite character from J.K. Rowling’s original novels who did not appear in the original film franchise. His inclusion in the new adaptation signals HBO’s intention to expand on elements of the source material that were previously left out of the big-screen version.

Serafinowicz, known for his work in both live-action and voice acting, recently appeared in the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon. His previous credits include roles in Parks and Recreation as Edgar Covington and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy as Denarian Saal. He has also voiced characters in major animation and gaming franchises, including Darth Maul in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace and Big Daddy in Sing and Sing 2.

The HBO Harry Potter series is being developed as a long-form adaptation of all seven books, with each season expected to cover one novel. The project aims to deliver a more detailed and faithful retelling of the original story compared to the film franchise.

The series features Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The wider cast also includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

Written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, the series is set to premiere in December on HBO and HBO Max. Production is currently underway, with additional seasons already in development as part of the planned multi-season format.

The casting of Peeves is expected to excite fans who were disappointed by the character’s absence in the original films, which reportedly removed him due to time constraints.
