New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson has come to the defence of analyst Monica McNutt after she faced backlash from Taylor Swift fans over a viral hot-mic moment during the NBA Finals.

Following the Knicks' championship-clinching victory over the San Antonio Spurs on June 13, 2026, Brunson used a post-game interview to address the controversy directly, urging Swift's devoted fanbase to ease up on the broadcaster.

“I just want to say something to the Swifties,” Brunson said during an interview with McNutt. “She's a really good one. Cut her some slack. It's all good. I promise.”

“She's not a Knicks fan. Get out of here, girl,” McNutt said, unaware that viewers could hear the remark. The comment quickly went viral, prompting criticism from Swift fans who pointed to the singer's long history of supporting the team.

Swift attended the game alongside Este and Alana Haim, wearing Knicks-inspired attire and cheering from courtside as New York completed a historic comeback victory. Fans were quick to share evidence of her previous connections to the franchise, including photos of her wearing a vintage Amar'e Stoudemire jersey and attending Knicks events dating back more than a decade.

After the backlash intensified, McNutt publicly apologised and admitted she had been mistaken about Swift's ties to the team.

The analyst explained that she had not seen Swift at recent Knicks games and had recently spotted her supporting the Cleveland Cavaliers alongside fiancé Travis Kelce, leading her to incorrectly assume the pop superstar was not a New York supporter. She later acknowledged that Swift's history with the franchise proved otherwise.

Brunson's comments came during celebrations after the Knicks secured their first NBA title since 1973, with the point guard earning Finals MVP honours. Rather than prolonging the debate, the Knicks star appeared eager to move the conversation forward, encouraging unity between basketball fans and Swifties alike.

McNutt subsequently thanked Brunson for his support, while the incident continued to generate headlines across both sports and entertainment circles. For Brunson, however, the message was simple: the controversy had run its course, and it was time for everyone to enjoy the Knicks' long-awaited championship celebration.
