Joanna “JoJo” Levesque and Mike Colter have signed on to star in the upcoming romantic drama The Very Thought of You, a jazz-infused love story set in Los Angeles.

According to Deadline, both stars will also serve as executive producers on the independent feature.

Written and produced by John Zaring, the film is set in the Eagle Rock neighbourhood of Los Angeles and follows Emmy Davis, a former television talent show finalist whose promising music career was derailed after experiencing abuse at the hands of a powerful music producer. Now 30 years old, Emmy lives a quiet life working as a barista while caring for her grandmother and keeping her past hidden.

The story takes a turn when she meets a widowed jazz pianist and college professor, played by Colter, who is raising his young daughter while struggling to reconnect with his passion for music. As the pair grow closer through their shared love of music, they must confront painful memories and decide whether they are willing to embrace a second chance at happiness.

The project marks JoJo’s first movie role in more than a decade. The singer and actress, known for her successful music career and recent stage work in Moulin Rouge! The Musical, said the story explores important issues within the entertainment industry while offering a compassionate look at healing and resilience.

Colter, known for starring in Luke Cage and Evil, described the film as a story about “finding rhythm again” both emotionally and creatively.

Deadline reports that production on The Very Thought of You is scheduled to begin in Los Angeles in November 2026 under the Zaring/Cioffi Entertainment banner in association with Colter Productions.
