The cause of death of veteran actor James Handy has been officially revealed, more than a week after the Top Gun: Maverick star was killed outside his home in Los Angeles.

According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, Handy died from a stab wound to the torso, with neck compression listed as a contributing factor. Authorities have officially ruled his death a homicide.

Handy, who was 81, was attacked on June 3, 2026, outside his home in the Tarzana neighbourhood of Los Angeles. Emergency responders found the actor unconscious in the front yard before he was transported to hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Police arrested Michael Gledhill, the 44-year-old son of Handy's longtime partner, Wendy Gledhill. According to investigators, Gledhill called 911 after the attack and allegedly confessed to the killing. He has since been charged with murder and could face up to 26 years to life in prison if convicted.

The case has drawn significant attention due to the disturbing details surrounding the incident. Authorities said Gledhill allegedly admitted responsibility both during the 911 call and when officers arrived at the scene.

Handy's partner later revealed that her son had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had reportedly stopped taking his medication shortly before the attack. She described the tragedy as devastating for the entire family.

A respected character actor with a career spanning nearly five decades, Handy accumulated more than 150 screen credits. He was known for appearances in films including Top Gun: Maverick, Jumanji, Arachnophobia and Logan, as well as television series such as NYPD Blue, The West Wing and Criminal Minds.
