‘Widow’s Bay’ secures another season before its first finale airs
Matthew Rhys led mystery series heads into its finale with strong reviews and growing audience support

Apple TV has officially renewed Widow’s Bay for a second season ahead of the show’s first season finale, while creator Katie Dippold has also signed a multi year overall deal with the streamer.
The announcement arrived on June 11, just days before the Season 1 finale is scheduled to premiere on June 17. The series first debuted on April 29 and quickly developed a strong reputation among critics and viewers.
Dippold, who serves as creator, executive producer and showrunner, joked about the direction of the new season by saying that everything on the island is perfectly fine and there is nothing to worry about. The humorous remark reflects the show’s blend of mystery, horror and comedy.
Widow’s Bay stars Matthew Rhys as Mayor Tom Loftis, a man attempting to revive his struggling island community. The isolated location lacks reliable technology and is filled with residents who believe the island is cursed. As tourism finally begins to return, strange events that had long been dismissed as folklore start becoming reality.
The cast also includes Kate O’Flynn, Stephen Root, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Kevin Carroll, Dale Dickey, K Callan and Jeff Hiller.
Dippold developed the series with executive producer Hiro Murai through Chum Films. Murai directed five episodes during the first season. Additional executive producers include Claudia Shin and Rhys, while Ti West, Sam Donovan and Andrew DeYoung also directed episodes. Apple Studios produces the series.
Matt Cherniss, Apple’s head of programming, praised the creative team and said audiences had embraced the show’s mysteries, humour and secrets. He added that the company was excited to continue the story with another season.
The renewal also strengthens Apple’s relationship with Dippold through her new overall deal. The writer is best known for projects including The Heat, Spy and the 2016 version of Ghostbusters. The agreement means she will continue creating and developing projects for Apple in the coming years.
The first season has earned widespread praise. According to reports, the series holds a 97% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviewers have highlighted the balance between suspense and humour as one of the show’s biggest strengths.
With a second season already confirmed before the conclusion of its debut run, Widow’s Bay has become one of Apple TV’s newest success stories and gives viewers reassurance that the mysteries surrounding the island will continue beyond the upcoming finale.
