Matt Damon has revealed that he is eager to return to the Bourne franchise, admitting that efforts to develop another instalment have been ongoing for years despite the absence of a new film since 2016.

The Oscar-winning actor, who has played Jason Bourne in four films, said he and his collaborators remain keen to bring the character back to the big screen. Speaking about the future of the franchise, Damon explained that there are always attempts underway to develop a fresh story that could justify another chapter.

“We're always looking to try to get another one of those because we loved it, everyone who worked on them,” Damon said, adding that writers are continually trying to come up with a new direction for the series.

The actor last portrayed the former CIA assassin in Jason Bourne, which was released in July 2016. The franchise began with the 2002 film The Bourne Identity and went on to become one of Hollywood’s most successful action series, spawning multiple sequels and a spin-off starring Jeremy Renner.

Damon’s comments come more than two years after reports emerged that a new Bourne film was in development at Universal, with filmmaker Edward Berger attached to the project. At the time, no script had been completed and Damon’s involvement had not been confirmed.

While previous returns to the franchise were closely linked to director Paul Greengrass, Damon no longer appears to be making his participation contingent on the filmmaker’s involvement. Greengrass has previously indicated that he believes a younger director should take over the series moving forward.

The actor is currently promoting The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan, which is scheduled for release on July 17, 2026. However, his latest comments suggest that he has not closed the door on revisiting one of his most iconic roles if the right story can be found.

For now, there is no official confirmation that a sixth Jason Bourne film will move forward, but Damon’s enthusiasm is likely to fuel renewed excitement among fans who have waited a decade for the superspy’s return.
