Tim Allen says Buzz Lightyear’s voice stops him talking in public
The actor recalled being mistaken for Tom Hanks while attending a theatre performance with his family in Chicago

Tim Allen has revealed that the popularity of Buzz Lightyear has made everyday life surprisingly difficult, with the actor saying he often avoids speaking in public because people immediately recognise his voice.
The 72 year old star discussed the issue while promoting Toy Story 5 during a SiriusXM interview alongside co stars Tom Hanks, Greta Lee and Conan O’Brien. Allen explained that his wife, actress Jane Hajduk, regularly reminds him to keep his voice down whenever they attend sporting events or other public outings together.
According to Allen, his distinctive voice as Buzz Lightyear has become so well known that even a few words can attract attention from nearby fans. He joked that Hajduk often tells him to whisper if he wants something because speaking normally would instantly reveal his identity.
Allen said his wife enjoys attending Pittsburgh Steelers games and prefers sitting among other supporters rather than in private areas. However, he admitted that maintaining privacy has become difficult because of the connection audiences have made with the beloved Toy Story character.
The actor also shared a humorous story from a family outing to see a production of The Wiz in Chicago. Hajduk had warned him not to talk, but after he briefly got up from his seat, several women behind him apparently recognised him and called out to who they believed was Tom Hanks.
Allen recalled the women saying they loved him in Toy Story, leading him to realise they had mistaken him for his long time co star. Hanks has voiced Woody since the original 1995 film, while Allen has portrayed Buzz Lightyear throughout the franchise.
Reflecting on his career, Allen noted the irony that he became associated with family entertainment despite beginning his career as a stand up comic known for more adult material. He said he never expected to become the voice of Buzz Lightyear and star in The Santa Clause films during the same period.
Toy Story 5 reunites Allen with Hanks and Joan Cusack, who returns as Jessie. The film also features newcomers Greta Lee and Conan O’Brien and is scheduled for release on June 19.
