Careless driving blamed for deadly van inferno

The Motorway Police announced that it has completed its initial investigation into the Murree Expressway accident and fire that killed ten people, including five children and injured 16 others.

The police stated that the van driver was suspected of negligence and carelessness and registered a case against him for causing loss of life and property through reckless driving.

Recounting the details of the accident, Motorway Police Inspector Tahiruddin said that he was on duty when he received information that a van accident had occurred at Khajot. He said that he called the fire brigade and Rescue 1122 on his way to the site of the accident.

He said that when he arrived at the location, van number CAJ5407, which was involved in the accident, was on fire. He said that he immediately got to extinguishing the fire using available equipment while trying to help passengers get out of the van. The injured were shifted to the hospital.

The police said that when the incidents were reviewed, it was found that the unknown driver was driving carelessly, due to which the van fell into a drain and caught fire. They added that the rescue operation was difficult because the doors of the van had become jammed against the wall of the drain, due to which the passengers could not get out of the vehicle in time and 10 passengers, including 5 children, burned to their deaths.
