'Destiny 2' records its highest player count in two years after release of its final content update

Destiny 2 has recorded its highest player count in two years following the release of its final content update, Monument of Triumph.
The update launched on June 9 and marks the final major addition to the long-running looter shooter after Bungie announced in May that active development of the game would come to an end following a nine-year run.
At the time, the studio confirmed that future expansions had been cancelled, with Monument of Triumph positioned as a farewell update for the game's community.
The release prompted a significant increase in player activity. According to SteamDB figures referenced in reports, Destiny 2 reached a 24-hour peak of 167,867 concurrent players on Steam following the update's launch.
The figure exceeds the player peaks achieved by recent expansions Renegades and Edge of Fate and represents the game's largest surge in activity since The Final Shape expansion launched in 2024.
Ahead of the update's release, members of the Destiny 2 community discussed efforts to demonstrate continued interest in the franchise despite the end of active development.
Some players expressed a desire to push player numbers higher than those of Marathon, Bungie's extraction shooter and one of the studio's newer projects.
Based on reported Steam player data, Destiny 2's post-update peak surpassed Marathon's all-time Steam player record of 88,337 concurrent users, achieved at the time of that game's launch.
The renewed interest has also reignited discussion among fans regarding the future of the franchise. Community members have continued to reference calls for a potential Destiny 3, with reports noting that a petition supporting a new instalment attracted hundreds of thousands of signatures.
Despite the increase in player engagement, there has been no indication that Destiny 3 is currently in development.
Reports also suggest Bungie may be preparing significant staff reductions as the studio continues to transition towards future projects.
