Prime Video has released the first full trailer for Elle, the upcoming Legally Blonde prequel series that explores the teenage years of Elle Woods long before she arrived at Harvard Law School.
The trailer introduces newcomer Lexi Minetree as a young Elle Woods and follows the fan-favourite character as her seemingly perfect life is turned upside down when her family relocates from Bel-Air, California, to Seattle in 1995. The move forces Elle to leave behind her friends, familiar surroundings and social status as she attempts to navigate an unfamiliar high school environment.
Set to the sounds of No Doubt's Just a Girl, the footage shows Elle struggling to fit in among her new classmates, whose grunge-inspired style and attitudes clash sharply with her colourful fashion sense and upbeat personality. While many students view her as an outsider, the trailer suggests that Elle gradually finds her place while remaining true to herself.
According to the official synopsis, the series takes place years before the events of the original Legally Blonde film and follows Elle as she experiences complicated friendships, first love and the awkward challenges of adolescence. Through these experiences, viewers will see how the confident and ambitious young woman from the beloved film franchise began to take shape.
The series stars Minetree in the role made famous by Reese Witherspoon, who serves as an executive producer. The cast also includes June Diane Raphael as Elle's mother Eva Woods and Tom Everett Scott as her father Wyatt Woods, alongside Chandler Kinney, Gabrielle Policano, Jacob Moskovitz and Zac Looker.
Created by Laura Kittrell and co-showrun with Caroline Dries, Elle is produced by Amazon MGM Studios in association with Witherspoon's Hello Sunshine banner. The project was developed to explore the formative experiences that shaped one of modern pop culture's most recognisable characters.
The release of the trailer arrives 25 years after Witherspoon first portrayed Elle Woods in the 2001 comedy classic Legally Blonde. The character went on to become a cultural icon, inspiring a sequel, a Broadway musical and multiple spin-offs.
Elle is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on 1 July. Confidence in the series already appears high, with Amazon having renewed the show for a second season ahead of its debut.
