Donald Trump greeted with boos as NBA Finals appearance during which he appeared to have fallen asleep
Videos from Madison Square Garden quickly spread online as social media users dissected every reaction

Donald Trump received a hostile reception from sections of the crowd during Game 3 of the NBA Finals at Madison Square Garden in New York, where the New York Knicks hosted the San Antonio Spurs.
As the national anthem was performed before tip off, television cameras briefly showed the US president in attendance. According to multiple reports and videos shared online, loud boos echoed around the arena, although some applause could also be heard. The reaction quickly became one of the most discussed moments of the evening on social media.
Trump attended the game in his home city as the Knicks attempted to extend their lead in the championship series. The appearance marked another high profile sporting event for the president, who has regularly appeared at major contests during his second term.
Clips posted by journalists and fans from inside Madison Square Garden showed spectators reacting when Trump appeared on the giant screens. Several videos circulated widely across X and other platforms throughout the night.
Later in the game, another video generated attention online after some viewers claimed Trump appeared to briefly close his eyes while seated courtside. Social media users suggested he had fallen asleep during the contest, though no official confirmation supported those claims.

The footage showed Trump sitting with his hands folded in his lap before lifting his head moments later and returning his attention to the court. The short clip sparked jokes and memes online, with critics mocking the president over the incident.
Separate photographs from the game also renewed discussion about visible bruising on Trump’s right hand. Similar marks have been photographed on several previous occasions. The White House has previously stated that the bruising was linked to frequent handshakes and Trump’s use of aspirin.
Despite the online attention surrounding the president, the focus on the court remained the NBA Finals matchup between the Knicks and the Spurs. New York entered the game looking to move closer to a championship, while San Antonio attempted to avoid falling into a deeper series deficit.
Trump has experienced similar reactions at sporting events in the past. Reports noted that he was also booed during the men’s final of the US Open in 2025.
