Hugh Laurie has delivered a sharp and witty response to a viral social media critique that claimed every episode of the hit medical drama House follows the exact same formula.
The debate began when journalist Janet Murray posted a tongue-in-cheek review of the series, joking that each episode consists of a patient developing a mysterious illness, House repeatedly getting the diagnosis wrong, nearly losing his job, and then solving the case at the last possible moment.
Laurie responded with a dose of sarcasm, saying the show had experimented with episodes where House got the diagnosis right immediately, but they only lasted six minutes and network executives weren't pleased. He also joked that episodes where House never solved the case and the patient died didn't go over well with audiences either.
The actor then defended the show's formula by comparing it to celebrated artists revisiting familiar themes throughout their careers. He pointed to works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Frida Kahlo, and Henry Moore, arguing that the appeal lies in the variations and creativity within a recurring structure.
"If all you see is hospital, medical blah blah, then it wasn't meant for you," Laurie quipped, before teasing that he looked forward to reading Murray's first novel.
After some users criticized his response as "classless," Laurie offered a characteristically brief comeback: "OK."
Murray appeared to take the exchange in good humor, later joking that she might now be too busy working on her first novel following the attention her comments received.
