Bowen Yang shares surprising reason he postponed his SNL exit
Bowen Yang opened up about postponing his SNL departure after a personal request from Lorne Michaels

Bowen Yang has opened up about the emotional decision behind his departure from Saturday Night Live, revealing that a personal phone call from Lorne Michaels convinced him to delay his planned exit from the long-running comedy show.
Speaking with Rachel Sennott for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Yang reflected on his final months at SNL and the factors that led him to stay longer than originally intended. The comedian revealed that he had planned to leave the show following its milestone 50th season, believing the series was in a strong position without him.
However, Yang said Michaels personally reached out and encouraged him to return for part of the following season. According to Yang, Michaels told him that several new cast members had joined the show and that his presence would help guide them through the transition period.
The conversation ultimately changed Yang’s plans. He explained that it was the first time he felt Michaels directly needed him, making the decision to stay an easy one despite already preparing to move on.
During the interview, Yang also reflected on his seven-year run at SNL, describing his final days on the programme as deeply emotional. He recalled receiving heartfelt messages from cast members and becoming overwhelmed during his final table read as he reflected on the relationships he had built behind the scenes.

Yang’s candid comments offered fans a rare glimpse into the personal side of his SNL departure and highlighted the lasting impact Michaels had on one of the show’s most popular modern cast members.
