Fable set for February 2027 release as Microsoft unveils new trailer at Xbox Showcase
Microsoft has confirmed that Playground Games’ reboot of Fable will launch on February 23 2027, following its delay beyond the previously expected 2026 release window.
The new release date was announced during the Xbox Games Showcase 2026 alongside a new trailer that offered fresh details about the upcoming action role-playing game.
The footage also teased the return of Jack of Blades, one of the most recognisable villains from the original Fable series.
Fable will be released on PlayStation 5, Xbox consoles and PC via Steam, with pre-orders now available.
Set in the fantasy world of Albion, the reboot introduces players to a new story beginning in the rural village of Briar Hill.
According to details shared by the developer, players start as a child whose heroic powers awaken before a mysterious stranger turns the village, including the protagonist’s grandmother, to stone. The event sets off a journey across Albion that will shape the fate of the world.
Playground Games has confirmed that Fable will feature a fully open-world version of Albion, allowing players to explore the setting without the restrictions seen in previous entries.
Combat will once again revolve around the series’ traditional Strength, Skill and Will system, combining melee combat, ranged attacks and magic abilities.
Returning enemies such as Hobbs and Balverines will appear alongside new creatures, including the fire-breathing Cockatrice.
Outside of combat, the game retains many of the life-simulation elements that defined earlier Fable titles. Players will be able to purchase homes and businesses, take on jobs, build relationships, marry, raise families and influence the world through their actions.
The reputation system has also been expanded. Rather than relying on a simple morality meter, individual non-playable characters will react differently based on a player’s actions and personal history.
Playground Games says more than 1,000 fully voiced NPCs will populate Albion, with choices capable of permanently affecting towns, landscapes and local communities.
Development is being led entirely by Playground Games, best known for the Forza Horizon series, marking the studio’s first action role-playing game.
