The National Junior Championship kicked off on Sunday evening with a vibrant and colorful opening ceremony at the Peshawar Sports Complex, organized by the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Directorate of Sports.
The event was formally inaugurated by Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Minister for Information Shafiullah Jan and Advisor on Sports and Youth Affairs Taj Muhammad Tarand.
Provincial Special Assistant Humayun Khan, Member of the Provincial Assembly Mian Sharafat, Secretary Sports Asif Khan, Director General Sports Tashfeen Haider, and other dignitaries were also present.
Teams from all four provinces, Islamabad, and various departments presented an impressive march-past, while spectators enjoyed a dazzling fireworks display during the ceremony.
Speaking on the occasion, Information Minister Shafiullah Jan welcomed athletes and officials from across the country and expressed hope that the championship would showcase high-standard competitions.
“Sports teach our youth sportsmanship, discipline, and perseverance,” he said. “Winning and losing are part of the game; true success lies in learning from your mistakes and moving forward.”
Jan highlighted the provincial government’s efforts to provide equal opportunities to male and female athletes and said multiple projects were underway for the promotion of sports in the province. He then formally declared the National Junior Championship open.
Advisor for Sports and Youth Affairs Taj Muhammad Tarand, in his address, said that such national events bring young people from different regions closer together and promote national unity. He assured that the government would continue organizing such competitions to provide more opportunities for young talent to shine.
Tarand noted that the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa government, under Chief Sohail Afridi and in line with the vision of PTI founder Imran Khan, was giving special attention to sports development. He cited the recent successful holding of the Under-21 Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Games, which saw participation from over 8,000 athletes, along with other events for orphans, persons with disabilities, minorities, transgender individuals, madrassa students, and special Ramazan sports competitions. He also mentioned the successful Ice Hockey event held in Chitral.
Tarand assured athletes and officials that they were guests of the province and that his office doors would remain open to address any issues they might face. He urged participants to compete with full enthusiasm, hard work, and adherence to the spirit of sports to make the event memorable.
