Jennifer Lopez has returned to familiar territory with the Netflix romantic comedy 'Office Romance', a film that has quickly become the streaming platform's most-watched movie worldwide and in the United States.

The R-rated comedy debuted on Netflix on June 5 and climbed to the top position on the service's global and US charts within a day of its release. The strong opening continues Lopez's successful partnership with Netflix, following the streaming success of action thriller 'The Mother' and science-fiction adventure 'Atlas', both of which attracted large audiences after their debuts.

In 'Office Romance', Lopez plays Jackie Cruz, the powerful chief executive of airline company AirCruz. Her character unexpectedly develops feelings for company lawyer Daniel Blanchflower, portrayed by British actor and writer Brett Goldstein. Their growing attraction unfolds against a backdrop of corporate rules that prohibit workplace relationships and a legal controversy threatening the airline's reputation.

The project carries particular significance for Goldstein, best known for playing Roy Kent in the hit comedy series 'Ted Lasso'. The actor co-wrote the screenplay with longtime collaborator Joe Kelly, revealing that Lopez was the sole choice they envisioned for the leading role from the outset.

According to Goldstein, the idea emerged during conversations while travelling between filming locations for 'Ted Lasso'. Both writers shared a love of traditional romantic comedies and felt the genre had been missing a standout entry in recent years. Their discussions eventually led them to craft a script specifically tailored for Lopez, whom Goldstein described as the ideal modern romantic-comedy star.

Even after completing the screenplay, the writers doubted they would be able to secure Lopez's involvement. They sent the script accompanied by a note explaining that she was the only actor they wanted for the role and that the film would not move forward without her participation.

What they did not realise was that Lopez was already a fan of Goldstein's work. The actress has frequently spoken about her admiration for 'Ted Lasso' and especially Goldstein's portrayal of Roy Kent. Upon reading the script, she embraced the opportunity to play a character unlike many of her previous romantic-comedy roles.

Lopez noted that Jackie Cruz represents a significant departure from the aspiring dreamers and working professionals she has often portrayed. Rather than seeking rescue or validation through romance, Jackie is a self-made executive who has already built a successful life and career before love enters the picture.

The film has also generated attention beyond its storyline. Promotional appearances by Lopez and Goldstein sparked rumours that the pair might be romantically involved off screen. However, both stars firmly rejected the speculation during a television interview, with Lopez pointing out that similar rumours routinely emerge whenever she is seen working alongside male co-stars.

While critical reaction to 'Office Romance' has been mixed, audiences have nevertheless propelled the film to the top of Netflix's rankings. For Lopez, whose career has spanned music, film and television, the movie's early success suggests that audiences remain eager to follow her latest chapter - especially when it comes wrapped in romance, humour and a touch of Hollywood intrigue.
