'House of the Dragon' boss says Battle of the Gullet is 'craziest episode of television ever made'

House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal has set expectations sky-high for the series' long-awaited Battle of the Gullet, describing the upcoming instalment as "arguably the craziest episode of television ever made."

Speaking about the highly anticipated sequence ahead of the third season's premiere, Condal revealed that bringing one of the most significant events from George R R Martin's Fire and Blood to the screen required years of planning and an unprecedented production effort.

The Battle of the Gullet, a massive naval and dragon-powered conflict during the Targaryen civil war, will open Season 3 and serve as one of the franchise's most ambitious action sequences to date.

According to Condal, the scale of the battle pushed the production team to new limits. The sequence involved multiple ship sets, enormous water tanks and a combination of practical effects and visual effects designed to create a realistic and immersive depiction of warfare at sea. He compared the undertaking to producing a major blockbuster film rather than a television episode.

The Battle of the Gullet has been one of the most anticipated storylines among readers of Martin's source material. Originally expected by many fans to appear earlier in the series, the battle was ultimately reserved for the opening of Season 3, allowing the creative team additional time to execute the sequence at the scale they envisioned.

With Season 3 set to begin with the spectacle, Condal believes viewers are about to witness something unlike anything previously attempted on television.
