Amazon clarifies future of Bond games amid 007 First Light sequel speculation

Amazon says it holds future Bond game rights but says it is too early to discuss any 007 First Light sequel

Amazon MGM has clarified its plans for the future of James Bond video games after comments from company executives sparked speculation that a sequel to 007 First Light had already been confirmed.

The discussion began after Amazon’s General Manager of Gaming, Jeff Gattis, spoke about the company’s role in the Bond franchise following the success of 007 First Light.

The game reportedly sold 1.5 million copies within its first 24 hours and ended with the message, “James Bond will return,” leading some fans to believe a sequel was already in development.

However, neither Amazon MGM nor developer IO Interactive has officially announced a follow-up title.

Gattis explained that Amazon did not publish 007 First Light because the agreement between IO Interactive and Bond rights holders was completed before Amazon acquired the intellectual property.

“We did not [make First Light],” Gattis said. “We do have a stake in it because we now own the IP, but that IP acquisition happened after the First Light IO deal was already done.”

Gattis added that future Bond games would be handled by MGM and “theoretically, by Amazon Game Studios,” prompting widespread discussion online about what that could mean for the franchise.

Following those comments, Amazon issued a statement clarifying its position.

“Amazon MGM holds the rights to any future James Bond video games but it’s still too early to discuss future projects.”

The company also highlighted its ongoing relationship with IO Interactive, stating, “We have a great relationship with IO Interactive and are proud of what we’ve accomplished together on 007 First Light. Our partners at IO will reveal more about 007 First Light in the near future and we’re looking forward to sharing what’s next.”

For now, Amazon has confirmed only that it controls future Bond gaming rights, while any potential sequel remains unannounced.
