Lego unveils $800 Sagrada Familia set marking Gaudí centenary with record piece count

Lego has revealed a new Sagrada Familia set in its Architecture series, created to mark the centenary of Antoni Gaudí’s death and featuring the company’s largest ever piece count.

According to Lego, the model, which is set to be released later this year on November 1, replicates the iconic Barcelona Basilica and is built from 12,060 pieces, making it the most complex set the brand has produced to date.

The release also coincides with ongoing construction of the real Sagrada Familia, which began in 1882 and is expected to be completed this year.

The set stands at 62 centimetres tall and features a detailed exterior rendered in pale beige bricks. Designers have also incorporated a modular structure, allowing sections of the model to be separated to reveal an interior inspired by the cathedral’s architecture, including recreated stained glass elements.

Lego Architecture designer Rok Žgalin Kobe said the team approached the project with care and respect for Gaudí’s legacy.

“We felt an immense responsibility to do justice to the Sagrada Família through this design,” he said. “Our goal was to honour Gaudí's vision with the utmost respect, capturing the rhythm of the basilica's construction, its extraordinary complexity and ambition, and translating that into an immersive building experience.”

He added, “This is not only the largest Lego set ever, but a model of one of the most ambitious architectural works in the world.”

The designer noted that balancing scale and detail while representing a structure still under construction for more than a century presented a unique challenge.

The Sagrada Familia set joins other landmark buildings in Lego’s Architecture series, which has previously included designs based on works by Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier.
