KARACHI: The police arrested another two target killers, this time from Zaman Town. The men are said to be affiliated with a leading political party and are involved in at least four murders.

SSP East Ahsan Umer said the suspects, Amjad Sarzameen and Sher Hakeem, confessed to being involved in the murder of Najeeb, who was the gunman of the former Awami National Party Quaidabad president Jamal. The duo also allegedly confessed to killing four other people in Quaidabad.

The police seized two 30-bore pistols, one 9mm pistol, one 7mm rifle, one 0.22 gun, a mauser and dozens of rounds of ammunition. “We had been on the look-out for the suspects for quite some time now and eventually they were nabbed by one of our teams in Zaman Town,” Umer said.

Zaman Town’s Inspector Naeem said the criminals had taken shelter under the banner of a political party. “We have evidence of their involvement in extortion and land grabbing in the area.”

Giving an example, Naeem said police have recovered a ‘parchi’ (slip) from one of the suspects in which a demand of Rs100,000 as extortion was made from a bread maker in the area. “The poor tandoor wallah was certain he would be killed by these criminals, but fortunately for him, we caught them before any further harm could be done.”

About gunman Najeeb’s murder, the inspector said the actual story behind it was land grabbing in Zaman Town, which had spiraled out of control. He added that the suspects had stashed their weapons in hideouts in the katchi abadis of Zaman Town.
