A Pennsylvania mayor has publicly criticised a former police officer who resigned from the Bethlehem Police Department to compete on the latest season of Love Island USA.
Sean Reifel, an Easton native who joined the department in 2025, was announced as one of the contestants for Season 8 of the popular Peacock reality dating series. The show follows a group of singles living together in a villa as they pursue romantic connections while competing for a cash prize.
Following the cast announcement, Bethlehem Mayor J. William Reynolds expressed frustration over Reifel's departure, arguing that the city had invested significant resources in training him for law enforcement.
According to Reynolds, the police department spent thousands of taxpayer dollars to send Reifel to the police academy before he chose to leave the force. The mayor also noted that the department is currently facing staffing shortages and will be unable to fill the vacancy until next year.
Reifel officially joined the Bethlehem Police Department in August 2025 after being sworn in by Reynolds. Less than a year later, he resigned from the position and is now appearing on Love Island USA, which began its new season this week.
In promotional material for the series, Reifel introduced himself as a police officer and spoke about helping people through difficult situations. However, department officials confirmed that he is no longer employed by the city.
Representatives for the reality series have not publicly commented on the mayor's remarks. Reifel has also not responded publicly to the criticism.
The situation has generated discussion online, with reactions divided between those who support Reifel's decision to pursue a television opportunity and others who agree with concerns raised about the investment made in his police training.
