Sony Santa Monica studio head Cory Barlog has confirmed that Kratos will remain part of the God of War franchise following the reveal of the upcoming spin-off God of War Laufey during the PlayStation State of Play on June 2 2026.

God of War Laufey shifts focus away from Kratos to his wife Faye, also known as Laufey, following the events of the 2018 reboot.

The game follows her journey through the Everywhen, described as an afterlife realm where gods from multiple mythologies exist and compete for power.

While Kratos does appear briefly in the gameplay footage, the narrative centres primarily on Faye.

Following the reveal, an interview featuring Cory Barlog and Laufey game director Ariel Lawrence was published on the PlayStation YouTube channel.

Lawrence explained that she initially assumed she would continue working on a Kratos-led story, saying, “I had just assumed it would be another Kratos game and that was who I would be telling stories about for the rest of my life.”

Barlog responded by confirming that Kratos will continue to play a role in future projects within the franchise.

He said, “It’s exciting. Faye is, while it’s a different thing, it’s still part of the larger tapestry of what we truly want to explore, all these different characters in there. But there’s always going to be Kratos games throughout the whole history.”

Lawrence also added, “Oh for sure. We can’t not tell stories about the big guy,” reinforcing that Kratos remains central to the long-term direction of the series.

God of War Laufey is currently in development at Sony Santa Monica, with further franchise plans yet to be officially detailed.
