An exhibition of Australian artist Michal Glikson’s work will open at the Alhamra Art Gallery on Thursday. The paintings, Glikson said, were based on her interactions with people in Pakistan and India during the time she spent in the two countries for her studies.
The exhibition titled The Half Circle Scroll has been jointly organised by the LAC and the Australian High Commission. It will be curated by Tanya Suhail of the LAC.
The painter defined the work as an attempt to understand the culture and lifestyle of people in places she had visited in Pakistan and India. “I started work on the project out of an urge to map my physical, emotional and psychological footprint in these places,” the artist said. She said she was inspired to study similarities between Australia and the sub-continent while attending a course on colonisation.
Art critic David Briker said the work reflected life at places such as roadside teashops, footpaths, open fields and in tent houses and trains.
He said Glikson was a street artist whose work could be taken as representative of several stages in society’s development. The exhibition will continue till October 8.
An exhibition of paintings and photographs by Butool Waheed will open at the Alhamra Art Gallery at 5pm on October 3. The exhibition, titled Side by Side, will also continue till October 8. The artist said her work was based on the side-effects of human actions and the effect they had on society.
