After years of criticism surrounding nudity in Euphoria, a new revelation from Sydney Sweeney and creator Sam Levinson has reignited discussion about one of the show’s most controversial characters.
In an interview published by The New York Times, Levinson revealed that he initially considered removing nudity from Cassie’s storyline during the third and final season of the HBO drama. According to the creator, he explored the possibility of filming scenes in ways that would avoid explicit content altogether.
That idea, however, was quickly challenged by Sweeney herself.
Levinson recalled telling the actress that he was considering shooting Cassie’s scenes without nudity. The creator said Sweeney responded by questioning the decision, pointing out that her character had become an OnlyFans model in the latest season.
According to Levinson, Sweeney replied, “Are you kidding? I’m playing an OnlyFans model. You’re telling me you’re going to, like, skirt around it?”
The exchange has attracted significant attention online because Cassie has long been at the centre of conversations about nudity and sexualisation in Euphoria. Since the show’s debut, some viewers and critics have argued that certain scenes featuring the character were excessive or unnecessary, while others defended the creative choices as part of the series’ exploration of youth, identity and self image.
Levinson addressed those criticisms during the interview, explaining that actors are informed about the requirements of roles before accepting them. He also stressed that performers have the right to decline scenes and that productions cannot force actors to participate in intimate content.
The writer and director said creating a safe environment for performers remains a priority, adding that honest performances depend on actors feeling comfortable and protected while working.
Levinson also praised Sweeney’s professionalism, describing the actress as fearless and highlighting the trust they have built through years of collaboration on the series.
The comments arrive just as Euphoria officially comes to an end. HBO confirmed on June 1 that Season 3 serves as the final chapter of the Emmy winning drama, bringing the story of Rue, Cassie and the rest of the ensemble cast to a close.
For Sweeney, the latest revelation may surprise some viewers who assumed she had pushed back against explicit material in the past. Instead, Levinson’s account suggests the actress believed nudity remained an authentic part of Cassie’s final storyline, particularly given the character’s involvement in the online subscription platform world depicted during the season.
The disclosure has generated fresh discussion across social media, with fans debating artistic intent, performer agency and the role nudity should play in television storytelling. As Euphoria concludes its run, the conversation surrounding Cassie remains as divisive and closely watched as ever.
