Indian actor Taapsee Pannu has opened up about the pressure women face to achieve unrealistic body standards, sharing a personal account of her struggle to attain a flat stomach and urging fans to embrace their bodies rather than chase perfection for social media.
Taking to Instagram Stories, Taapsee reflected on her younger years and revealed that she once became obsessed with eliminating lower belly fat despite being physically fit. “I remember I had this obsession because while growing up, I was extremely fit, but I never understood why the lower belly fat always stayed,” she wrote.
The actor said she pushed her body beyond its limits in an attempt to achieve an idealised image, only to realise that the effort was ultimately harmful. “I overpushed myself, and rightly said, when you overpush yourself, it rings an alarm in your brain that your body needs protection,” she explained.
Taapsee said the intense routine had the opposite effect. Instead of reducing water retention and body fat, her body began retaining more water, particularly around the lower abdomen.
“Instead of actually losing water retention, the body starts retaining it, and then that lower belly fat, which might actually not just be fat but also water retention, stays and increases by overworking out, which I really believe people should not do,” she said.
The actor also stressed that women's bodies are not meant to conform to a single standard and that physical changes are a natural part of life due to hormonal fluctuations. “I accepted it very late after really torturing myself, and then I realised that there are some days it happens and there are some days it doesn't happen,” she added.
Sharing advice she received from her nutritionist, Taapsee said a small amount of fat and water retention around the lower abdomen can serve a biological purpose. “It’s actually important to have that little bit of fat, a little bit of water retention under the belly, because that's where your reproductive organs are and they need protection, and by virtue of being a woman, you need that protection,” she said.
Encouraging her followers to adopt a healthier perspective, the actor urged women not to put themselves through extreme diets or workout routines in pursuit of a picture-perfect body.
She emphasised that having a slight belly bulge is normal and healthy, and warned against comparing oneself to unrealistic standards often portrayed on social media.
On the professional front, Taapsee was most recently seen in the courtroom drama Assi, released on February 20. The film explores rape culture in India and features the actor as a determined lawyer fighting for justice on behalf of a sexual assault survivor.
