Maddox Jolie-Pitt, the eldest son of Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, has reportedly filed legal documents to remove “Pitt” from his surname amid the family’s long-running estrangement from the Oscar-winning actor.
According to reports first published by TMZ and cited by People, the 24-year-old is seeking to legally change his name from Maddox Chivan Jolie-Pitt to Maddox Chivan Jolie. The filing has not yet been officially approved by a judge.
The move follows earlier signs that Maddox had already begun distancing himself publicly from the Pitt surname. Earlier this year, he was credited simply as “Maddox Jolie” while working as an assistant director on Angelina Jolie’s film Couture.
Maddox is not the only one of Jolie and Pitt’s children to step away from the family name in recent years. Daughter Shiloh legally dropped “Pitt” from her surname after turning 18 in 2024, while Zahara and Vivienne have also publicly used the surname Jolie instead of Jolie-Pitt.
The reported name change comes nearly a decade after Jolie filed for divorce from Pitt in 2016 following an alleged incident aboard a private plane involving the actor and their children. The former couple’s divorce was finalised in 2024 after years of legal battles involving custody and disputes over Château Miraval, the French winery they once co-owned.
Maddox, who was born in Cambodia in 2001, was first adopted by Jolie in 2002 before Pitt later adopted him after the couple began their relationship.
Reports over the years have suggested Pitt’s relationship with several of his children has remained strained since the separation. Neither Pitt nor Jolie has publicly commented on Maddox’s reported filing.
