An Austrian court has sentenced a 21-year-old man to 15 years in prison for plotting a terrorist attack targeting Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour concerts in Vienna in 2024.

The defendant, identified under Austrian privacy laws only as Beran A., was convicted by a court in Wiener Neustadt on multiple terrorism-related charges after prosecutors said he planned to attack concertgoers using knives and homemade explosives.

Authorities arrested Beran A. in August 2024, just one day before Swift was due to perform three sold-out shows at Vienna’s Ernst Happel Stadium as part of her record-breaking Eras Tour. The threat ultimately led organisers to cancel all three concerts, affecting around 200,000 fans expected to attend.

According to prosecutors, the suspect had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State group and attempted to acquire weapons including a machine gun and grenades. Investigators also discovered bomb-making materials during a search of his apartment.

During the trial, Beran A. admitted guilt on charges connected to the Vienna concert plot and expressed remorse before sentencing. “I would just like to say that I am sorry,” he told the court in his final statement.

The case also involved two additional suspects accused of planning attacks elsewhere in the Middle East during Ramadan 2024. One co-defendant, Arda K, was sentenced to 12 years in prison on related terrorism charges, while a third suspect remains in custody in Saudi Arabia.

The Vienna terror plot prompted global concern at the time because of the enormous crowds expected at Swift’s concerts. Austrian authorities later revealed the suspect had hoped to “kill as many people as possible”.

Swift addressed the incident publicly later in 2024, saying the cancellation of the concerts was devastating but adding that authorities had helped prevent what could have become “a massacre situation”.
