Marlon Wayans has spoken publicly about his experience supporting his transgender son, describing it as a moment that reshaped his understanding of family and love.
In an interview with Variety, the Scary Movie actor discussed his son Kai’s transition and said his role as a father is centred on support rather than judgement. “It taught me true, unconditional love,” he said.
Wayans explained that his focus remains on his children’s wellbeing. “At the end of the day, are my children happy? And if they're happy, then I'm happy for them. My job as a father is to protect, respect and honour my children, and make sure they feel supported. It's not my job to judge them; it's my job to love them.”
He added that it took him about a week to move “from denial to acceptance” after learning about his son’s transition, noting that the family is now in a stable place.
“All of my kids are gifts, and our love is the wrapping paper. And if you think you're gonna bully my child, go somewhere else. It's not going to happen. I won't stand for it,” he said.
Wayans also addressed broader conversations around his friendship with comedian Dave Chappelle, who has faced criticism over jokes relating to the transgender community in his stand-up specials.
Wayans said he would not maintain a friendship if he believed someone acted out of hate, adding that he understands Chappelle’s intent as part of his approach to comedy.
“I wouldn't hang with Dave if he was full of hate. I know Dave's heart, and his intention isn't to punch down. He's just standing there and defending his front line as a comedian,” he said.
