Law & Order: Special Victims Unit showrunner Michele Fazekas has addressed the future of Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler’s relationship following the cancellation of Law & Order: Organized Crime.

Speaking to PEOPLE ahead of the SVU Season 27 finale, Fazekas acknowledged the continued fan interest surrounding Benson and Stabler, portrayed by Mariska Hargitay and Christopher Meloni. The pair first appeared together when Law & Order: SVU premiered in 1999 and quickly became one of television’s most popular crime drama duos.

“Everyone’s always asking me about Stabler,” Fazekas told PEOPLE, adding that she would include Meloni in more storylines if scheduling allowed. According to the showrunner, the actor’s busy workload has made frequent appearances difficult.

Meloni reprised his role as Elliot Stabler in 2021 for the spin-off series Law & Order: Organized Crime, which officially ended after five seasons earlier this year. Following the cancellation news, Meloni thanked fans in an emotional social media video and reflected on his long-running connection to the character.

Fazekas said the relationship between Benson and Stabler remains important to both the writers and longtime viewers. She noted that she wants to “acknowledge” and “service” the dynamic whenever possible, depending on Meloni’s availability.

The interview has reignited discussion among fans about whether Benson and Stabler could eventually reunite on screen in a larger storyline. Their chemistry and emotional history have remained a central talking point in the Law & Order franchise for more than two decades.

All episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit are currently available to stream on Peacock.
