Retired detective links Savannah Guthrie’s mother Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance to chilling ‘wrench attack’ theory
A retired detective believes Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance may be tied to a violent 'wrench attack' kidnapping scheme

The mysterious disappearance of Nancy Guthrie, the mother of Today show host Savannah Guthrie, may be linked to a disturbing criminal tactic known as a “wrench attack,” according to a retired Colorado detective.
Lisa J. Miller, a former law enforcement executive with the Colorado Attorney General’s Office, said the case contains several signs that resemble the increasingly dangerous kidnapping method often associated with cybercriminals and organized extortion schemes.
The term “wrench attack” reportedly originated from a 2009 web comic joke suggesting it could be easier to beat someone with a $5 wrench for their password than hack into their accounts digitally. Over time, the phrase became associated with criminals using physical threats, kidnappings, and torture to force victims or their families to hand over money or sensitive information.
Nancy Guthrie, 84, disappeared from her Tucson, Arizona home earlier this year under suspicious circumstances. Surveillance footage released by the FBI allegedly showed an armed masked individual tampering with her doorbell camera around the time of her disappearance.
Investigators also discovered signs of a struggle at the scene, including blood evidence on the front porch and a back door left propped open. Authorities believe Guthrie was alive when she was abducted.
According to Miller, traditional wrench attacks are often orchestrated by sophisticated criminals operating overseas who recruit local individuals to carry out kidnappings and violence. However, she suggested the Guthrie case appears somewhat different because the likely target was not Nancy herself, but potentially her daughter Savannah Guthrie due to her public profile and financial status.
Miller pointed to what she described as both “unsophisticated” and highly calculated elements in the case. While the suspect captured on surveillance footage appeared disorganized, the prolonged ransom activity and lack of arrests suggest possible involvement from more experienced criminals behind the scenes.
The investigation has remained active for more than 100 days, with multiple ransom notes reportedly sent to media outlets and the Guthrie family. Authorities have already arrested one California man accused of sending a fake ransom demand unrelated to the actual disappearance.
Savannah Guthrie previously said she believed at least some ransom communications connected to her mother’s case were genuine, adding another layer of complexity to the ongoing investigation.
Law enforcement agencies continue searching for answers, while the FBI and local authorities are offering a combined reward of more than $1.2 million for information leading to a breakthrough in the case.
