Global hit 'Emily in Paris' heads for its finale

Sixth season to conclude story that reshaped escapist television

After years of champagne-soaked parties, couture fashion and romantic misadventures across Europe, Netflix's hit series Emily in Paris is preparing to take its final bow, bringing an end to one of streaming television's most escapist and globally recognisable franchises.

The platform confirmed this week that production has begun on the show's sixth and final season, with star Lily Collins announcing the news through "a farewell video promising viewers the final chapter in Emily's adventure of a lifetime".

The season will begin filming in Greece before moving to Monaco and eventually returning to Paris, the glamorous backdrop that helped transform the romantic comedy into a cultural phenomenon. Since its debut in 2020, the series has become synonymous with fantasy travel, luxury fashion and postcard-perfect European living.

What began as the story of a young American marketing executive navigating life in Paris gradually evolved into a global brand, fuelling tourism conversations, fashion trends and endless online debate over croissants, couture and complicated love triangles.

Series creator Darren Star described making the show as "the trip of a lifetime", thanking fans, Netflix and the cast as filming for the concluding season officially commenced. "We can't wait to share this last chapter with you," he said, framing the final season as both a celebration and farewell to the world viewers have followed for six years.

The announcement closes a remarkable run for a series that frequently divided critics yet thrived with audiences worldwide. While reviewers often mocked its glossy fantasy version of Paris and exaggerated stereotypes, viewers embraced its bright escapism at a time when global audiences increasingly sought comfort viewing and aspirational storytelling.

Season five demonstrated that appeal remained strong. According to Netflix, the latest instalment drew 26.8 million views globally within 11 days of release and became the platform's number one television series in 24 countries, including France, Italy, Brazil and Germany.

The show also appeared in the Top 10 rankings across 91 countries, underlining its international pull. The programme's influence extended beyond streaming charts. Star was recently awarded France's highest civilian honour, the Légion d'honneur, reflecting the unusual relationship between the series and the country it fictionalised.

Though often criticised in France for romanticising Parisian culture, the show also boosted international fascination with the city, particularly among younger travellers inspired by Emily Cooper's fashionable lifestyle.

The upcoming season appears set to continue the show's signature jet-setting formula. After season five took Emily to Rome, the final chapter will expand further into the Mediterranean with filming in Greece and Monaco.

Storylines left unresolved include Emily's uncertain romance with Italian fashion heir Marcello Muratori, lingering feelings involving her former partner Gabriel and the engagement of her best friend Mindy Chen to fashion executive Nicolas de Léon.

The farewell season also marks the end of an era for one of Netflix's defining lifestyle dramas. Alongside Collins, returning cast members include Ashley Park, Lucas Bravo, Lucien Laviscount and Philippine Leroy-Beaulieu, whose characters became central to the show's mix of romance, workplace rivalry and high-fashion spectacle.
