Destiny 2 future cancelled as Bungie moves game into maintenance
Destiny 2 will no longer receive new expansions following Bungie’s announcement that the long-running online shooter is moving into a maintenance phase. The studio confirmed that future development on expansions has been canceled, with only limited updates planned for the game in the coming months.
Bungie is expected to release a final set of updates in June, including additional tiered loot, a final Moments of Triumph event, and the return of Sparrow Racing.
No further major content has been announced beyond these updates, although the studio stated players may be among the first to know if future Destiny-related plans are revealed.
According to reporting by Bloomberg, Bungie is preparing for a significant number of layoffs as it concludes development work on Destiny 2.
The report stated the company does not currently have a new project in production for the team once the game’s development cycle ends. It indicated Bungie is not planning to immediately begin work on Destiny 3, with the size of potential job cuts not confirmed.
The shift follows a prolonged period without major content updates, during which players experienced a gap in new seasonal material.
Bungie’s resources have been partially directed towards Marathon, an extraction shooter project that has been in development alongside Destiny 2 support.
The transition has raised questions about internal resource allocation as Destiny 2 moves away from its earlier expansion-driven model.
Sony, which owns Bungie, has previously taken impairment charges related to the studio while maintaining its long-term valuation.
