'Contaminated food drives hepatitis cases'

ISLAMABAD:

Amid a surge in stomach-related illnesses during the summer season, gastroenterologist Dr Abdullah Bin Khalid has urged the public to avoid unhygienic and improperly preserved food, warning that contaminated food and unsafe drinking water remain major causes of Hepatitis A and E infections, particularly among children and pregnant women.

Speaking to a local media outlet on Sunday, Dr Khalid highlighted growing concerns over unsafe food practices during the summer months, especially the consumption of frozen food stored for extended periods under inadequate conditions.

He warned that improper food handling substantially increases the risk of food-borne infections and gastrointestinal illnesses. According to the specialist, contaminated food and polluted water are among the primary contributors to the spread of Hepatitis A and E during hot weather, with pregnant women facing an elevated risk of severe medical complications.

Dr Khalid advised the public to avoid stale, poorly stored and unhygienic food items, particularly products sold in unsanitary or poorly maintained environments. He stressed that maintaining adequate hydration and a balanced diet is essential.
