A cat in Melbourne has been called a “miracle” after surviving a 14-story fall from an apartment building and walking away with only minor injuries.

The 9-month-old cat named Mont Blanc fell from a 20th-floor balcony while his owner, Tim Aupanno, was at work. Aupanno had left the balcony door slightly open so the cat could move around, but returned home to find Mont Blanc missing and spent hours searching the building.

The cat was later discovered after a neighbour on the sixth floor heard meowing coming from an exterior ledge. Mont Blanc had landed in a bush after the fall, which veterinarians believe helped cushion the impact.

He was taken to Lort Smith Animal Hospital, where vets found that he had suffered only a minor lung puncture despite the extreme height of the fall.

Veterinarian Kassandra Makeham described the incident as extraordinary, saying it was the “highest fall” she had seen a cat survive. She added that cats are often able to survive such incidents due to their instinctive ability to twist mid-air and position their bodies to reduce impact damage.

Aupanno said he was devastated during the 18 hours Mont Blanc was missing and relieved when he was finally reunited with his pet. He added that the experience had convinced him to keep all balcony doors closed in future to prevent any repeat of the accident.

The case adds to a well-documented phenomenon in veterinary medicine known as “high-rise syndrome,” where cats fall from tall buildings but often survive due to their ability to orient themselves mid-air and land feet-first.
