The creators of Stranger Things have revealed that David Harbour was not their original choice to play Chief Jim Hopper in the hit Netflix series.

Instead, the role was initially offered to Billy Crudup before Harbour ultimately landed the part that became one of television’s most recognisable performances.

During an appearance on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, series creators Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer discussed the early casting process behind the sci-fi drama. The topic came up after Harbour submitted a pre-recorded question asking whether he had truly been the “second choice” for the role of Hawkins Police Chief Jim Hopper.

According to Ross Duffer, Harbour’s audition tape immediately stood out to the creative team. He explained that Harbour delivered a single take that instantly convinced them he was the perfect fit for Hopper, leading to his casting shortly afterwards.

Harbour went on to portray Hopper across all five seasons of the Netflix phenomenon alongside Winona Ryder and Millie Bobby Brown. His performance became a central part of the show’s success and helped establish Hopper as one of the series’ most beloved characters.
