Off Campus fans finally have answers about Garrett Graham’s mysterious back tattoo, and the meaning behind it is deeply personal to actor Belmont Cameli.

In the new Prime Video adaptation, Garrett is seen with a large Latin phrase tattooed across his upper back reading, “Nullum Gratuitum Prandium,” which translates to: “There is no free lunch.”

The tattoo marks a major change from the original books, where Garrett instead had a fire tattoo on his arm. According to Belmont, however, the new ink was intentionally created to reflect Garrett’s personality and struggles in a more meaningful way.

Speaking to Teen Vogue, the actor revealed that the phrase actually came from his own high school wrestling team’s mantra.

“What essentially it means is that everything in life is earned. Everything has a cost; nothing comes free,” Belmont explained.

He added that the message perfectly matched Garrett’s mindset throughout the series, especially his refusal to accept success or praise without working for it.

“It’s a core tenet of who Garrett is that he refuses to let anything be handed to him,” the actor shared. “He wants to deserve all of the accolades and achievements that he has.”

Belmont also explained why the tattoo was placed across Garrett’s back instead of elsewhere on his body.

“So having it across his back, I thought was a nice place for it because when he has the jersey on, it says Graham right there,” he said. “But when he peels the jersey off, just on his own skin, you get to see that phrase really encapsulate who he is.”

Fans online have praised the detail, with many calling the tattoo one of the most meaningful character additions in the Prime Video adaptation so far.

The actor also hinted that the tattoo quietly foreshadows Garrett’s ending later in the series, something viewers are now eagerly dissecting online.
