Weekend box office: Obsession rises with $16M as Michael stays No. 1
The musical biopic Michael has topped the North American box office once again, earning an estimated $26.1 million in its fourth weekend.
The film continues its strong global performance, bringing its worldwide total to approximately $703.9 million, making it one of the year’s biggest hits.
Internationally, Michael added to its momentum with an $83.8 million global weekend, maintaining its dominance as audiences continue to show strong interest in the high-profile biopic. The film is now closing in on major all-time benchmarks for music-driven biographical releases.
In second place, The Devil Wears Prada 2 collected $18 million in its third weekend. The sequel saw a noticeable drop compared to previous frames, as competition intensified across new releases and shifting audience demographics.
The biggest surprise of the weekend came from Obsession, which opened to a stronger-than-expected $16.1 million. The Focus Features and Blumhouse-backed title earned an A- CinemaScore and attracted a younger audience, with strong word-of-mouth driving turnout across premium formats.
Other titles in the top 10 included “Mortal Kombat II,” “Sheep Detectives,” and “Super Mario Galaxy,” all continuing steady holds in their respective runs.
Overall, the domestic box office weekend reached approximately $106.1 million, marking a slight decline from the same period last year but still reflecting a stable marketplace heading into the summer season.
Industry analysts note that strong holdover performance from Michael and breakout interest in Obsession helped balance out softer returns from established sequels, keeping overall revenue competitive.
