Nintendo hints at more Switch 1 games as Shuntaro Furukawa discusses software strategy

Nintendo says it is considering expanding software support for both Switch 1 and Switch 2 platforms

Nintendo has suggested that more original Switch 1 games could still be in development as the company considers ways to expand its wider software business alongside the upcoming Switch 2 launch.

The comments came from Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa during a question-and-answer session linked to the company’s latest financial report for the 2026 fiscal year, which ended in March.

“I believe it is important that we consider how to expand the entire software business, including titles for both Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, instead of focusing only on sales of Nintendo Switch 2 software,” Furukawa said.

The statement has led to speculation among players that Nintendo may continue to support the original Switch longer than expected, particularly amid ongoing concerns about the reported Switch 2 price increase and the affordability of the older console.

So far, Nintendo’s 2026 release schedule for Switch 1 has included Tomodachi Life, Pokémon Champions and the upcoming Rhythm Paradise Groove.

Several other major releases, including Yoshi And The Mysterious Book and the Star Fox remake, are currently planned only for Switch 2.

Furukawa’s comments also raised discussion about whether Nintendo may increase the number of cross-generation releases rather than focusing exclusively on Switch 2 titles.

According to Furukawa, only 40% of Tomodachi Life players currently own a Switch 2, suggesting a significant portion of Nintendo’s audience remains on the original hardware.

Some players have also pointed to lower-budget franchises such as F-Zero and Metroid as possible candidates for future Switch 1 releases.

Nintendo has not officially announced any additional Switch 1 games beyond its current schedule.
