Water misery hits Hyderabad amid heatwave
The ongoing spell of intense heat in Hyderabad has exposed the city's worsening water crisis, with prolonged shortages and irregular supply leaving residents across Hyderabad, Latifabad and Qasimabad facing severe hardship in the scorching weather.
Citizens in several areas say they have been enduring disrupted water supply for months, while many localities receive water only for a very short duration, making it nearly impossible for families to store enough water for daily use. The situation has forced residents to purchase water from private suppliers or rely on costly alternatives to meet basic household needs.
Residents complained that the failure of civic and municipal institutions to ensure uninterrupted supply of clean drinking water has added to public frustration during the ongoing heatwave. Many families are now spending a significant portion of their income on water, further increasing the financial burden amid rising inflation.
People from different neighbourhoods reported that even when water is supplied through pipelines, the process often creates new problems. According to residents, clean water initially starts flowing through the lines, prompting families to begin filling underground tanks and rooftop storage containers. However, during the filling process, dirty and foul-smelling water suddenly starts entering the pipelines, contaminating the stored water.
Residents said once contaminated water mixes into storage tanks, the entire supply becomes unusable due to the strong odor and unhygienic condition.
