SHAKARGARH:

A man taken into custody during the execution of arrest warrants by Shah Gharib Police allegedly died while in police custody, prompting his family to accuse police officials of torture and demand justice.

District Police Officer (DPO) Narowal Malik Naveed Ahmed has ordered an inquiry into the incident.

According to SHO Shah Gharib Police Station Ali Zaman, police arrested Muhammad Hussain, a resident of Dudhu Chak, in compliance with court-issued arrest warrants by Magistrate Ashfaq Ali.

The SHO stated that Hussain's condition suddenly deteriorated while he was being transported to the police station.

He was shifted to a hospital for medical treatment but could not survive.

However, the deceased's wife, Rizwana Bibi, rejected the police version and alleged that SHO Ali Zaman, accompanied by police personnel, scaled the wall of their house in Saleem Town late at night and entered the premises while the family was asleep.

She claimed that police subjected Muhammad Hussain to severe torture and alleged that the SHO also struck him with the butt of a gun before taking him away in a vehicle.

The deceased's brother, Zahid Hussain, alleged that police tortured Muhammad Hussain to death and later dumped his body near Kararanwali Phatak.

The family further claimed that the deceased was already facing a court case and accused police of conducting the raid after allegedly accepting bribes from rival parties.

Following the incident, the body was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The family has submitted an application seeking registration of a case against SHO Ali Zaman, other police officials, and two individuals identified as Shaukat and Uzra.
