Will Smith is set to lead the upcoming action-thriller Supermax, a new Amazon MGM Studios project directed by David Gordon Green.

The film marks Smith’s first major non-franchise studio role in recent years and is expected to begin filming in mid-August.

Amazon MGM Studios secured worldwide rights to the project from Miramax in a deal reportedly valued at around $70 million. According to reports cited by Deadline, Supermax will debut as a streaming release rather than receiving a traditional theatrical rollout.

The story follows two FBI agents investigating a murder inside the world’s most secure prison. Smith will play one of the lead agents, while casting is currently underway for the second major role, described as a female FBI partner.

The screenplay has been written by David Weil and David J. Rosen, best known for their work on television projects including Hunters and Invasion. Producers on the film include Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman for The Picture Company, alongside Smith and Adam Fishbach for Westbrook Studios.

The project represents another high-profile collaboration between Amazon MGM Studios and Green, whose recent directing credits include entries in the Halloween franchise and the television series Scarpetta.

Industry attention surrounding Supermax has also focused on Smith’s continued box office appeal following the commercial success of Bad Boys: Ride or Die. The film performed strongly despite ongoing scrutiny following the actor’s widely discussed Oscars controversy in 2022.

With production preparations now underway, Supermax is shaping up to be one of Amazon MGM Studios’ most closely watched action releases in development.
