Elon Musk joins backlash against Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey film

Elon Musk has sparked controversy after criticising Christopher Nolan’s upcoming $250 million epic The Odyssey, joining a wave of online backlash over its casting choices.

The Tesla and X owner reposted and responded to multiple posts on X that accused the filmmaker of misrepresenting Greek culture by casting non-Greek actors in key roles. Musk appeared to endorse claims describing the film as “racist against Greek people and their cultural heritage,” responding “True” to several critical posts.

The debate has largely focused on Nolan’s decision to cast Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy and Elliot Page in another prominent role, with critics arguing the choices are historically inaccurate. Others online have also questioned the inclusion of rapper Travis Scott in a supporting role.

Some commentators, including right-wing media figures, amplified the criticism, suggesting the casting choices were politically motivated. Musk also engaged with posts mocking Page’s gender identity, further intensifying the backlash surrounding the film’s production.

Nolan, however, has defended his creative approach, previously stating that the film is a mythological adaptation of Homer’s ancient poem and not a strict historical reconstruction. He has also framed his interpretation as a creative retelling of oral storytelling traditions.

The controversy comes as The Odyssey prepares for a major theatrical release in July, with industry analysts already predicting strong box office performance for the $250 million production.

Despite the online debate, the film remains one of the most anticipated releases of the year, featuring a large ensemble cast and positioning itself as a major cinematic event in Nolan’s post-Oppenheimer era.
