Matt Bomer has officially joined season 2 of Peacock and Sky’s hit spy thriller The Day of the Jackal, according to Deadline. The actor will appear opposite Eddie Redmayne in a recurring role that is reportedly being kept under wraps.

According to the report, Bomer is expected to portray a villain in the upcoming season, which has already begun production in Budapest. The new installment also adds Weruche Opia and Pablo Schreiber as series regulars.

Based on Frederick Forsyth’s classic novel and the 1973 film adaptation, The Day of the Jackal follows a highly skilled assassin known only as the Jackal, played by Redmayne, who carries out deadly assignments for the highest bidder. The first season became a major success for Peacock and Sky, earning award nominations and strong viewership numbers in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

The series reportedly reached a 28-day audience of 4.6 million viewers in the UK, making it one of Sky’s biggest original drama launches. The show also ranked among the top streaming originals in the US during its debut weekend.

Bomer continues to expand his television résumé following acclaimed performances in Fellow Travelers, White Collar, and Doom Patrol. He is also currently appearing in Jonah Hill’s Apple TV film Outcome alongside Keanu Reeves and Cameron Diaz.

Deadline first reported the casting news as anticipation builds for the return of the acclaimed espionage drama.
